Get the special effect at The Edinburgh Playhouse
“It takes class to make entertainment as slick as this” -The Times on Mamma Mia
Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia!, Les Miserables and Chicago have all been staged at the splendid Edinburgh Playhouse, Scotland's home to the West End musicals and other productions that require the big stage for maximum impact. Forthcoming events include Cabaret, Never Forget, Chicago, Singing in the Rain, Beauty and the Beast, Lord of the Dance, We Will Rock You and The Sound of Music.
You get a great view from all the seats (until the people in front can't resist getting up to jive along to Dancing Queen); but for a truly luxurious theatre-going experience, book the Director's Box. This is a private suite located within the auditorium at circle level, which has eight lose-yourself Pullman-style seats, private bar, cloakroom and concierge at your service.
Do the rounds
The Edinburgh Playhouse is the UK's largest traditional theatre; it may not be as haunted as the Paris Opera, but it does have a colourful history, which is revealed on special theatre tours. The Playhouse guide will tell the story of the theatre from its grand opening as a luxurious cinema in 1929, to its visit from Laurel and Hardy in 1932, to its temporary closure in 1973, to its incredible successes from 1980 onwards. You get to look behind the scenes and tread the boards themselves, following in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest performers and most sparkling musicals.
The Edinburgh Playhouse (events department: 0131 524 3335) is owned and managed today by Live Nation, the world's largest producer and marketer of live entertainment events.
