A glass of champagne at the Forth Floor Bar, at the very top of the store overlooking the distant Firth of Forth (hence the spelling), is the perfect way to start an evening in the city. But don't stop there. Next to the bar, the brasserie has an all-day buzz about it, serving tasty, quick, light meals and snacks. The
piece de resistance, however (and quite the place to be seen), is the award-winning Forth Floor Fine Dining Restaurant, a luxurious destination in itself, with its panoramic view of Edinburgh Castle, the rooftops of the New Town and the Firth of Forth; and if you can tear your eyes away from the view, the food's pretty special too.

Harvey Nichols is at 30-34 St Andrew Square (0131 524 8388): a brand new and much acclaimed building which casts an exciting light on one of Edinburgh's oldest and most elegant squares. Like everything else about the store, it looks absolutely fabulous in its setting, surrounded by some of the city's most splendid Georgian architecture, a short walk from George and Princes Streets.
