The real deal
"...food so sublime it eclipses the wine. Almost" - The Observer
Visiting Edinburgh with friends? Got a Russian businessman to impress? Just have a weakness for great rooftop views? Look no further than The Tower Restaurant and Terrace, which occupy the top floor of the stunning, modernist, sandstone tower building constructed during the 1990s as part of the new Museum of Scotland.
The Tower Restaurant (0131 225 3003) is one of the hottest tickets in town. Sling your designer jacket over the back of your chair and settle in for lunch or dinner unfussily prepared from impeccably sourced, fresh Scottish beef, seafood, crustacea or game. With floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the Edinburgh skyline and castle, the Tower is light, contemporary and chic, but the mood fun, relaxed and celebratory: you can also expect a warm, professional welcome.
Over its eight years, The Tower has become a firm favourite with the locals as well as visiting stars of stage and screen, and has received plaudits from Michelin, the Good Food Guide and numerous independent critics. It holds a rare Wine Spectator Award of Excellence: its 150 or so wines from 14 countries encompass all major varieties, regions and styles – so winemakers are frequent visitors. Over 20 wines are available by the glass – and if the sun’s out on Edinburgh’s gleaming rooftops, you’ll have the luxury of sitting on the Terrace to enjoy one.
As a lively sister to The Witchery by the Tower and Rhubarb (the restaurant at Prestonfield), The Tower is the real deal. You’d expect nothing less.
